Rough Cut Deadline

This is the rough cut of our thriller opening sequence.

  1. Sound:
Really like the effect of the heartbeat and ticking; work well together and create a definite sense of urgency and warning as it speeds up.
Could maybe do more, with a simplistic sound track to relay the sinister atmosphere.
Begins to suggest the theme of identity and they mystery behind it, with the heartbeat not assigned clearly to either character; in keeping with the thriller conventions.

    Editing:
Love the way we are gradually shown more of the imprisoned characters and only little bits at a time and cutting to blackouts each time is really effective - suggesting a crime at the core of the narrative, a key thriller convention.
The titles could be played around with a bit more to make them more interesting and some allocated roles might work.
The sound and footage are layered cleanly and in sync with each other - really effective.

    Thriller Conventions:
The mise en scene is very dark and dim echoing/ mirroring the protagonist’s circumstances. The titles are also in keeping with this.
We assume that either one or both of the characters we are shown tied up in chairs are the protagonists and therefore we see protagonist's who are dis-empowered.
Finally the fact that the characters are tied up, tells us there is a crime at the core of this narrative - all key thriller conventions within the opening sequence.

  2. camera work:
the camera work is done very well as the opening shot is clear and by using a medium long shot you have been able to introduce the viewer to the scene.
the close ups used throughout the film show little bits of the charcters and the panning down on maya inbetween some of them show more of the character so the viewer is able to get more of an impression of who they are and what they are doing.

    mise en secen:
the costume and makeup is very good as you can see clearly that it is torn and some had blood on giving the viewer the sense that they are being held there without consent.
the lighting is also very good and it adds to the tension the sound brings as it is very dark and all you can see is the charcter being held down.
the props used in the film go with the theme of them being trapped. the rope around the legs and hands shows that they can not get out and the chair also adds to the fact that they arent able to move freely.

    thriller conventions:
this goes well with the conventions of a thriller as the mise en scene shows that it is dark and they are trapped these are often used in thrillers to create the sense of being tense and waiting for something to happen. the way the editing is done also creates the tense feel to the film.
